SSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS

St. Francis Hospital

2:03 am

Dana Scully turned the knob to Fox Mulder’s private room. She knew what she had seen and it must have been the same for Mulder on the cold January night in that cargo house. When Linda had made him "see" Scully shoot herself. God it had been tough to shoot Linda, her brain refused to think that it was anyone else *but* Mulder.

She walked across the room and smiled at the fact that Mulder was asleep. It was such a rare thing that she was able to watch Mulder sleep. His rest periods were  so infrequent and far apart that she had long ago begun to saver the moments she got to watch him rest peacefully.

"I’m not asleep Scully." He said softly still keeping his eyes closed. It didn’t surprise her that Mulder knew what she was thinking. Hell they had always known what the other was thinking, that’s why they made such a good team. Able to communicate to each other without a word was a great thing when you were covering each other’s assess.

"Mulder you should rest. It’s 2 am and you’ve got a nasty gun shot wound in your leg."

"What about you? You’ve got a sprained ankle Scully, you should be at home."

"And do you remember *how* I got that sprained ankle?" He looked at her innocently.

"I have no idea what you’re talking about." He said and she gave him a look.

Suddenly tears sprung to her eyes as memories began to flash through her mind. Men poking her with things she couldn’t feel nor understand. She lay on a steel metal table with hundreds of others, like Penny. She shivered at the thought as another image flashed through, bringing with it a searing pain. Something was hurting her but she couldn’t see it. Pain shot through her limbs and she doubled over.

"Scully?" she barely heard his voice. Things came flooding back to her and she had no idea what had triggered it. Then everything went dark. She could feel Mulder’s essence near her but she couldn’t see or hear him. Bright light suddenly cut through her eyes and she could make out a square like thing hanging above her. An image flashed on it and then it was gone and a man stood next to her. He held something in his hand and was talking to her. But all her mind was focused on was Mulder…was he hurt? Was her worried about her? Was he alive? Did he need her? Did he know how much she loved him?

The man made a sudden violent movement and several other men grabbed her and flipped her over. She felt a cool metallic feeling on the back of her neck and the men who held her tightened their grip. No, Scully thought, please no. She felt a sharp ripping feeling at the back of her head and pain shot through her system, she screamed and began shaking.

"Dana!" Mulder shook her fiercely. Scully’s eyes blinked and her vision cleared. She looked around the room and recoiled from his touch. Curling into a ball on the small hospital chair, her eyes wide and full of fear. "Scully? Whats wrong?"

She blinked and stared at him for a second and slowly recognition settled on her face and she flung herself at him. "Oh God Mulder." He closed his arms around her and pulled her onto the bed with him. He murmured gentle words in her hair, trying to comfort her and trying to understand what he’d just witnessed.

"What happened Scully?" She pulled back, straightening her shirt, which had come loose of her jeans, and running a hand through her hair. Mulder wished he hadn’t said anything, just so he could hold on to her longer.

"It was nothing Mulder." Scully said her hand resting near his leg, just inches from his manhood…Whoa Dana. And where would that get you? She tramped the thoughts and moved from the bed to the chair.

"Scully…"

"I’m fine, Mulder."

"So…how long have you been getting less sleep then me?" She sighed and looked toward the window.

"Since you got your sorry ass shot." She didn’t want to tell him about the nightmares that she would have about him getting killed.

"I’m not going to die…well not sitting here in this bed I’m not." She sighed.

"Don’t you see Mulder?"

"See what, Scully?"

"That I don’t want to have to go back to my bed without you." She said and looked him straight in the eye. She had never been the type to dance around a subject but it surprised him that she felt the same way he did. Mulder reached out for her and she moved from the chair back to the bed. He touched her cheek and she turned her head to kiss his palm.

His heart leapt at the gentle touch of her lips. But something inside made him pull back when she tried to touch him. And pain crossed over her eyes. Mulder could have kicked himself for his reactions. She pulled back from him and moved towards the picture window in his room. Mulder struggled with the wires attached to him, finally he made it out of the bed and crossed the room to Dana’s side. She felt the slight pressure of his hand on her shoulder and turned to look at him.

"Mulder you should be in bed."

"Not when my best friend is upset about something." She smiled, happy that he thought of her more then a partner.

"It can wait Mulder." She ushered him back to his bed. "I’m going home to get some rest. You should sleep too."

"Scully?" She paused in the doorway, looking back at him. "Think you could just hang around till I fall a sleep? That way you can make sure I get my rest."

She smiled and crossed back to his side. Knowing exactly why he wanted her to stay. She sat in the chair, rested her hand on his and smiled at him. "Alright. But you better fall asleep soon, I’m getting tired."
