She slowly walked into the empty house. The picture of a tiny little girl imprinted in her mind. She knew what she had to do, but she didnt know how to do it. The phone stood silently on the small end table mocking her. She picked it up and walked into the small room she had claimed as her own.
She tossed her jacket, and badge on the small desk. The phone fell to the bed as she paced in the room. Her mother knocked at the door and peaked in.
"Are you alright, Dana?" She looked up at her mother. She felt scared and alone. Unsure of herself and what she was about to do.
"Yeah. I was just about to call Fo-I mean Mulder." She mother smiled a bit at the mention of Mulders first name. She didnt even mean to use his first name, it felt odd.
"Alright. Say hello for me and diner will be ready soon." Her mother had always made it a little too obvious that she wanted more to be going to between herself and Fox Mulder. Always suggesting about the too spending downtime together, always telling Mulder when she was down, making him cheer her up.
Taking a deep breath she picked up the phone off the bed and stared at it. This would be the hardest thing she ever asked him. The small voice in the back of her head mocked her, saying that it was Mulder, he would mock her and then plow her off. Or he would be on a date and she would be interrupting him, so her wouldnt help her. Her brain stepped in and reasoned that it was only Mulder. He would come out to help her, but he would run off chasing some UFO and she was better off on her own. But her heart told her that he would drop everything for her, even a once and a life time chance of finding his sister. She put the phone down again and moved away from it, as if it would bite her.
"What the hell am I doing?" she asked the wall. She knew the answer to that one, she was about to open her heart to Mulder. She walked past the mirror and stopped. She glared at herself. "What the hell am I doing?"
She grabbed the phone and dialed the number. Why had she been so immature about the whole thing? Ofcourse Mulder would help her and if he didnt so what? She could do it on her own.
"Mulder." A deep, sleep filled voice came on the line.
"Its me. Did I wake you?"
"Wake me? Scully I dont sleep, how could you wake me?" His voice now more awake held a cheerful tone to it.
"I thought you promised to get some sleep this weekend." The doctor in her took over for a second, he never got enough sleep.
"Yes, Maam." She could almost she him saluting in his apartment. "Hows Maggie?"
"Shes fine. Do me a favor?" She asked biting her lip but she quickly cursed herself for acting like a scared child.
"Yeah. Sure. What do you need? Someone to stop by your house?"
"Think you could make a trip out here?" Her voice seemed shaky and she silently cursed herself.
"Yeah Whats up?" He asked suddenly very alert.
"I dont want to talk about it really."
"Oh no. Youre not getting out that easy. Did something happen?"
"Fox. Please, just come if you can, if not tell me and Ill handle it on my own." He paused, she never used his first name, except for when he had told her not too.
"Ill come but tell me why Im about to try and catch the red-eye out of DC." She sighed, he wasnt going to let get out of this one.
"A few days ago I was sleeping and the phone rang. I answered it and there was a little girl. She seemed to be asking for help. I called the number and got the address. Later I found out that a mother had just been murdered and thats what the voice had been asking to do. To save her."
"Oh Mulder, There was a little girl there and she now has no home, shes in protective custody and the cops all say that nobody called from the girls house called me. Sometime inside makes me want to protect her. I am now stuck on this case. I have to solve it. I dont know why but something makes me want to. Please, Mulder youll understand once you get out here." She heard a bag being zipped in the background.
"Ok, Im on my way. So tell me Scully. Hows your mother."
