I propose a compromise for the whole Civil War conflict. The conflict began with the abolition of importing slaves or buying slaves, and from there on the nation began to split. Every little thing that happened was like a wedge that dug deeper and deeper into the crack that was splitting the nation. Eventually a single event became the breaking point that would cause the nation to split. The election of 1860, where in Abraham Lincoln was elected president.

I wonder if it would have been possible to produce a compromise that would satisfy both the South and the North. My suggestion would to be to allow slavery but after a few years they slaves could earn enough money that would let them buy them selves and their families out of slavery. The owners would have to give the slaves a bit more freedom but not so much as to disturb their every day lives in the south. Most of the slaves would probably stay in slavery because of the benefits.

It is obvious what the benefits of staying in slavery to going out into the real world with no speaking skills and no known trade other then picking cotton. They would most likely stay at the plantations for shelter, food, and a basic job. They may not enjoy their job but who does?

This is obviously not a great compromise but it is a working one. Not all people would agree to this but it does keep both sides of the nation from reaching a breaking point for at least a while. It is also a light impact idea, what is meant by light impact is that some one doesn’t have to change their whole point of view or their beliefs. It is obvious that the south isn’t as accepting of new ideas as the north was. It would be almost impossible to change all the views of all the people in the south.

Another idea is to just basically tell the south that there is no way the north is going to let the south get away with treating the blacks like that. But to do that they north would have to take a good look at itself. Most people who lived in the north were against slavery but they still didn’t believe that the blacks were not equal to the white people. The problem was that lots of people didn’t believe in what they were fighting for.

But in a way the war was good. The war should have showed the nation and the rest of the world that America was truly a free nation. A nation that was made up by a group of people who were willing to fight and die for what they thought was right. They may have been fighting because a group of immature people decided that they would secede from the Nation because an election didn’t go they way they wanted, but at least they were not afraid to stand up and fight for what they believed in. If only today’s nation could stand behind their decisions, not matter what would happen to them.
